The Cincinnati Open, also known as the Cincinnati Masters or Western & Southern Open, is an annual professional tennis tournament that takes place in Ohio.

It’s actually one of the oldest tennis events in America that takes place at its original location. The Western & Southern Financial Group sponsors the event that draws tennis fans from all over the country. Here’s a guide to everything you need to know about the Cincinnati Open.

As one of the oldest tennis tournaments, the Cincinnati Open was started way back in 1899. The name of the tournament has changed several times over its long history. Some of the names were the Tri-State Tennis Tournament, the ATP Championship, and now the Western & Southern Open, after the current sponsors of the event.

As one of the largest pro tennis tournaments of the year, it definitely attracts some of the top talent in the sport. It is one of nine master’s tournaments for the men’s ATP, and one of five premier events for the women’s WTA.

Where is the Tournament?

The tournament has always been in the same location. It’s held in Mason, Ohio, near Cincinnati at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

The stadium was built in 1979. The location features four stadiums, Center Court, Grandstand Court, Court 3, and Court 10. There are also 13 other courts located within the tennis center.

When is the Tournament?

The tournament takes place each summer in mid-August, usually a few weeks before the US Open, and directly following the Canadian Open.

The 2024 Cincinnati Open took place from August 11-19, 2024.

The total prize money for 2024 was $6.7 million (USD) for the ATP. The total prize money for the WTA was $3.2 million (USD).

How to Get Tickets to the Cincinnati Open Tournament

If you want to purchase tickets for the Cincinnati Open, there are a few options. When you buy a single-session ticket, it gives you an assigned seat in the Center Court stadium, but you also have access to open seating options at the other courts. The best place to buy tickets is right on the Cincinnati Open website.

There you have the option of single session tickets, full series packages, mini packages of a few days, or the Powernet all-inclusive level which gives you access to a fully catered buffet of food and an open bar with air-conditioned seating.

Other ticket sites that you can use to purchase tickets include Ticketmaster and StubHub.

Keep in mind that wherever you sit is going to be a good view of the action in any of the stadiums. In Center Court, the seating capacity is around 11,000, so it’s a fairly intimate venue with exceptional seating.

How Do I See the Big Matches Like Djokovic, Nadal, or Swiatek?

All single-session tickets include access to the Center Court, so you should be able to see the big names. Check the schedule, which comes out a few weeks prior to the tournament, to see when your favorite players will play.

The Grandstand Court, which holds 5,000 people, also has a lot of the top players.

There are plenty of hotel options in Cincinnati, specifically, you will want to stay around the Mason area where the tennis center is located.

There is also the option of staying at an Airbnb or VRBO property. This can include entire homes in Mason, private apartments, or just renting out a room at someone’s house.

Keep in mind if you want to stay in downtown Cincinnati, it’s going to be about a thirty-minute ride to the event in Mason.

Getting Around Cincinnati

You can use the shuttle service if you book at one of the sponsored hotels for the Cincinnati Open. Otherwise, it’s easy to call an Uber to go to the event from your hotel or rent a car to have access to other places you want to go to in the city. It’s a pretty relaxed area, so you won’t have any problem with traffic going to and from the event in a car.

There is also a public transportation bus system called the “Metro.” You can take this from downtown Cincinnati to the event, but it’s going to take you at least an hour.

There is going to be a lot to do and see once you are at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

There is a family zone for kids with mini tennis courts to play on, tons of food and drink options, and a retail plaza where you can buy merchandise featuring your favorite tennis players.

When to Arrive at the Tournament

If you buy a full day pass for the event, it’s going to include a parking pass. You don’t have to arrive too early to park since there is ample parking space.

What to Bring with You

Summer in Ohio is pretty hot, so you will want to wear lightweight clothing that you are going to be comfortable walking around in. Sneakers or comfy sandals are fine. Make sure you bring some sunscreen with you or even a hat to wear.

You can’t bring outside food or drink into the event, except for one unopened plastic water bottle. There are plenty of vendors to buy water, drinks, and snacks. There is also a list of acceptable bags that you can bring into the event that the website goes over in detail.

What to Expect Inside

You can expect a fun, family-friendly atmosphere inside. There is also an app you can download from the Cincinnati Open website which will tell you exactly when certain players are playing, their practice times, and any other information that will be helpful.

The Cincinnati Open has over 60 hours of programming scheduled to air on ESPN 2 and the Tennis Channel.
