The T20 World Cup 2024, which kicked off on June 2, featuring 20 teams and taking place in the West Indies and the USA is now halfway through. India started their campaign against Ireland with a win and continued in the same vein in matches against Pakistan and the USA. The Rohit Sharma led India are now through to the Super 8 stage.
The T20 World Cup schedule was unveiled in January, with the matches being played across three venues in the USA and six in the West Indies. The tournament began with Canada facing the USA on June 2 in Dallas. The final is set for June 29 in Barbados.
The 2024 T20 World Cup will completely move out of the USA after the group stage. The matches in the Super 8 stage, also the semifinals and the final will be played in the West Indies. This edition of the T20 World Cup is yet to witness high-scoring games with the bowlers dominating, but nonetheless the matches have been thrilling.
Groups and format:
The 20 teams have been divided into four groups, and the top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8s stage. In this stage, the qualifying teams will be split into two groups of four; the top two teams from each group will qualify for the two semifinals and a final.
Group A - India, Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, USA
Group B - England, Australia, Namibia, Scotland, Oman
Group C - New Zealand, West Indies, Afghanistan, Uganda, Papua New Guinea
Group D - South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal
How the teams qualified:
West Indies and the USA gained direct entry to the tournament as hosts, with the USA making its inaugural appearance. Meanwhile, England, Pakistan, New Zealand, India, Australia, South Africa, Netherlands, and Sri Lanka secured spots by ranking among the top eight in the previous T20 World Cup held in 2022.
Afghanistan and Bangladesh secured their places as the next two highest-ranked teams in the T20I rankings, while the remaining spots were filled through regional qualifiers. Ireland and Scotland secured spots through the European qualifiers, and Papua New Guinea qualified from the East Asia-Pacific Qualifier.
Canada, set to debut in the tournament, advanced through the Americas Qualifier. Nepal and Oman clinched spots as Asian qualifiers, while Namibia and Uganda earned their places through the African Qualifier.
Host nations and event ambassadors:
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced in November 2021 that the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup would take place in the United States and the West Indies. Cricket West Indies and USA Cricket joined forces in a joint bid after two years of groundwork, reflecting a strategic alliance between the two cricket boards. Hosting this major tournament marks a significant milestone for the USA in the world of cricket, with the ICC expressing its aspiration to elevate the country's standing in global cricket through this event. Meanwhile, former T20 world champions Yuvraj Singh, Chris Gayle and Olympic Champion Usain Bolt are the event ambassadors for the T20 World Cup 2024.

It is because India are in Group A, the Rohit Sharma-led team will play all its preliminary matches in the USA. Its first three group games will be held in New York while the final tie will be in Florida. The marquee clash of T20 World Cup 2024 between India and Pakistan will be held in New York City on June 9. It will be their first T20I meeting since Virat Kohli's iconic knock at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the 2022 T20 World Cup where the 2007 champions had won the thriller against Babar Azam's men.
The arch-rivals had, however, faced each other three times in 2023, all in the ODI format. Two of those clashes were in Asia Cup where the first tie was washed out due to rain while India won the Super Four clash by 228 runs. The Rohit Sharma-led side then thrashed their arch-rivals by seven wickets in Ahmedabad on October 14 in the ODI World Cup group-stage clash.
