Tomb Raider Legend's PS5 debut — along with the latest release of Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus — has been one of the biggest seen by any PS Plus Premium games to date. It makes a strong case for why Sony should keep bringing PS2 games to PS5 and PS4 because we can't get enough of earning those Tomb Raider Legend trophies. Just think about how games could wind up on our list of PS2 games on PS5!

Tomb Raider Legend is the third-biggest PS Plus Premium game ever

  • Tomb Raider Legend is the third biggest debut for a PS Plus Premium game of all time
  • Only Sly Cooper and The Legend of Dragoon outperformed the game's PS Plus Premium debut
  • Besides The Legend of Dragoon, PS2 games have outranked all other PS Plus Premium games
Using a gameplay data sample from over 3.1 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights), we've tracked the debut player count of every game that has ever been added to PS Plus Premium. This includes every PS1, PSP, and PS2 game that has been added since the revamped PS Plus service was unveiled.
Tomb Raider Legend is the third biggest game to ever debut on PS Plus Premium, only beaten by one PS1 game and one PS2 game. Tomb Raider Legend was topped by Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus — a classic PS2 game that launched on PS5 and PS4 on the same day. Together, they show a great start for PS2 games on Sony's modern consoles.

The only previously available PS Plus Premium title to see a stronger debut than Tomb Raider Legend was classic PS1 game The Legend of Dragoon. Tomb Raider Legend saw 37.25% fewer PS5 and PS4 players than Sony's RPG classic, which remains the strongest PS1 game to debut on the subscription scheme.

While Tomb Raider Legend might be trailing behind Legend of Dragoon, it still holds a 32.38% player count lead over the next best PS Plus Premium game: PS1 classic Twisted Metal. You can check out the five biggest PS Plus Premium game debuts in the chart below.

Top 5 PS Plus Premium debuts of all time

#1 — Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (June 2024)
#2 — Legend of Dragoon (Feb 2023)
#3 — Tomb Raider Legend (June 2024)
#4 — Twisted Metal (July 2023)
#5 — Resistance Retribution (Feb 2024)

In terms of PSP games, Tomb Raider Legend saw 36% more player attention than the most popular PSP game to come to the service, Resistence Retribution. Beyond this, Tomb Raider Legend's debut has obliterated every other PSP games that have come to the service, with the portable console not seeing anywhere near the same love as classic PS1 and PS2 games.

What makes Tomb Raider Legend stand out amongst the crowd in particular is the fact it is a third-party title. This means it's the rare PS Plus Premium classic that wasn't publish by Sony. Given the lean towards Sony-published titles in the top five games, it's promising to see how subscribers have responded to Tomb Raider. It suggests that perhaps the PS2's back catalog might see more attention from players overall if they're this interested in a third-party game.

As a huge Tomb Raider fan and a particular lover of Tomb Raider Legend, it's amazing to see the game having such a high impact on the Premium tier. Usually, PS Plus Premium games go under the radar and see very little love or acknowledgment. Here's hoping we will get more Tomb Raider PS2 games added to the service in the future, I mean, it feels like a no-brainer after seeing this huge success.

Who knows, maybe these PS Plus releases will have an impact on our Tomb Raider series ranking. What do you make of the PS Plus Premium games? Have you played Tomb Raider Legend? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.1 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright GameInsights. Regarding this data:

  • When an account opens a game, this is registered as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
