on Sunday, April 23, 1995 following a brief illness. Mr. Fletcher was born in Durham, the son of the late Charles Columbus and Mary Edwards Fletcher. Mr. Fletcher was a retired U.S.

Army Master Sergeant, serving honorably for more than 20 years, including service during WWII and the Koren War. Following his military service, he served as Assistant to the Director for the Army Institute of Research. Mr. Fletcher is survived by his Mrs. Martha E.

Art Fleming, the original host of television's "Jeopardy!" died at home Tuesday of pancreatic cancer. He was 70. Fleming was diagnosed with the disease just two weeks ago, said his lawyer, Steve Hurm.

"We're all stunned," said Merv Griffin, creator of "Jeopardy!" and now its executive producer. "He was a great fellow. Art was the first 11 years of the success of TAn actor in radio, television, film and theater, Fleming appeared in numerous TV shows, including "Starsky and "Lou Grant" and "Moneychangers." He spent many years at KMOX Radio in St. Louis as host of two highly rated programs, "At Your Service" and "Trivia He made 48 movies, including "'Airplane II," with William Shatner, Chad Everett and Sonny Bono; and "MacArthur." Gerstacker, chairman of Dow Chemical Co. from 1960 to 1976, died Sunday night in Midland, Mich. He was 78. The cause of death was leukemia, said his stepson, William D. Schuette of Midland.

Gerstacker's tenure as chief of the nation's second-largest chemical company coincided with growing public opposition to the Vietnam War and the company's Art Fleming made 48 movies, but is best remembered as the first host of adviser W. Averill Harriman opposite Gregory Peck's Gen. Douglas MacArthur. But he was probably best known for his duties as a television game-show host. Gerstacker, former position as the military's sole supplier of napalm, a substance used in firebombs.

Recruiters from Dow Chemical were chased off college campuses in the late 1960s, and antiwar demonstrators protested at stockholders' meetings, objecting to civilian casualties caused by napalm bombing. Mr. Hoberecht graduated from Peabody High School and Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. He received a Masters Degree from Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio, and holds an Honorary Doctorate from Southwestern College. He served in the US Army Signal Corps, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1955. During his distinguished career with IBM, Mr.

Hoberecht was recognized for many technical contributions, and was a primary designer of IBM's Systems Network Architecture. Boland and husband, David of Owego, N. Y. and their three sons, Billy, David and Chris. After receiving his doctorate degree from Cornell University in 1935, he joined the faculty of N.C. State College (now N.C.

State University) as an instructor in geology. Except for four and one-half years during World War 11, while in the strategic minerals program of U.S. Geological Survey, he devoted his entire professional career to teaching and geological research in North Carolina. He retired in 1972 as Professor of Geology in the Department of Geosciences, N.C. State University.

JAMES H. HOGG HIGH POINT James Hilmore Hogg, 81, of the Presbyterian Home, Duplex 71, died at 12:15 p.m., April 25, 1995 at The Presbyterian Home. He was born May 3, 1913 in St. Paul, a son of James Lees and Alma Augusta Smith Hogg. A resident of High Point of 57 years, he came here from Dearborn, Mich.

He was a graduate of Mechanic Arts High School in St. Paul, attended McAllister College in Paul and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1935. He was associated with Lilly Industries, Inc. for 42 years, as a chemist, purchasing agent, and later as a salesman. He was a veteran of World War having served as a communications officer in the U.S.

Navy in the Pacific Theatre. he was a member of the North Carolina Presbyterian Historical Society and a former member of the Twlight Civitan Club. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Christian Life Sunday School Class, served as a deacon and an elder, and served on various committees in the local church and in Orange Presbytery, now Salem Presbytery. On Aug. 14, 1937, he married Lois Grier who survives of the home.

Also surviving are daughters, Patricia Alma Verreault and her husband, Joseph A. Verreault of Richmond, Dorothy Hilmore Rifai and her husband, Dr. Nader Rifai of Chestnut Hill, Mass; son, Thomas Grier Hogg and his wife, Mary Scott Pleasants Hogg of Raleigh; sister, thy Hogg Hasenclever of Garner; seven grandchildren, Sarah and Sami Rifai of Chestnut Hill, Amy Verreault Athavale and her husband, Ramchandra Athavale of Cary, Molly Hogg Dunn and her husband, Timothy Dunn of Durham, Carrie Anne Hogg Cherry and her husband, Todd Cherry of Lexington, Thomas Grier Jr. of Tampa, John Curt Hogg of Raleigh. JOHN SPILLMAN JR. WILMINGTON John Spillman of 417 Stonewall Jackson Drive, died Monday, April 24, 1995, in Davis Health Care Center. He was born in Wilmington on February 28, 1903, the son of the late John and Lillian Snipes Spillman Sr. Mr. Spillman was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and was the owner of The Camera Shop at Front and Grace Street, Wilmington, for 72 years.

Surviving are his wife, Lina Bowling Spillman; daughters, Mary Ann Covington and husband, James T. of Garner, Mildred Griffing and husband, David of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth James T. born in Raleigh, 21, 1901, was Mrs. Fay Harris, Jones, who was one of five children of Jesse J. Harris and Henrietta Hamilton Harris. The Everitt Jones' family moved to Smithfield in 1929, where he owned and operated "Big Boy" Bottling Co. for a number of years.

Being lifelong members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, after Mr. Jones' death in 1962, she remained active in the church and headed the Altar Guild for many years. She was active in the Smithfield Women's Club, The American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary and the War Mothers, among other interests. Alta F. Nolen, 82, a resident of 3323 Chapel Hill Road, died Wednesday at Durham Regional Hospital following several years of declining health. Mrs. Nolen was born in Durham, the daughter of the late Otha and Minnie Beck Franklin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Nolen.

Living in Durham her entire life, Mrs. Nolen worked for the American Tobacco Company for more than 40 years. She was a member of Cresset Baptist Church. Mrs. Nolen is survived by her daughter, Mrs.

Dorothy K. Wagstaff of Wendell; son, Mr. Johnny Killough of Durham; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Bullock and Mrs. Mattie Pate, both of Durham; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral service for Mrs. Nolen will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham by Rev. Danny Glover. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham, and at other times at the home. He was host of "Jeopardy!" when it aired as an NBC daytime show from 1964 to 1975 and during its first year in syndication, 1974-75. He was also with the show when it made a brief return to NBC's daytime schedule as "'The All New Jeopardy!" in 1978-79. In addition, he was host of the show "College Bowl" for seven years.

Schuette of Troutdale, Ore. WILLIAM HENRY LOWE DURHAM William Henry Lowe, 75, of 4913 Highway 55, died on Wednesday morning, April 26, in his home after a brief illness. Mr. Lowe was a native of Durham, and had lived in Lowes Grove Community all of his life. He was a graduate of Lowes Grove High School.

He was a retired employee of Exxon Company. He was a charter member of Immanuel Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and was on the Board of Trustees. 2 p.m. Friday, Immanuel Free Will Baptist Church, with Rev. Eddie Dollar and Rev.

HOOVER DURHAM Mrs. Lela Frost Carroll Hoover, 101, died Wednesday, April 26th at Northwood Manor Convalescent Center. Mrs. Hoover was born in York, S.C., the daughter of the late Jonathan James Allen and Candace Mullinaux Carroll. A resident of Durham since 1925, she was a seamstress for Baldwin's in Durham for over 30 years prior to retirement in 1973.

Mrs. Hoover was the oldest surviving member of Northgate Presbyterian Church, and as a member of the Presbyterian Women. Mrs. Hoover is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Virginia H.

Gerleman and Mrs. Martha H. Wilkinson, both of Durham; son, Mr. Hal Vaughn Hoover Jr. of Mobile, six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral service for Mrs. Hoover will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Northgate Presbyterian Church by Rev. David Tucker. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. Instead of flowers, memorials may be made to Northgate Presbyterian Church, 2504 N. Roxboro Road, Durham, N.C. 27704..
